What Defines Who We Are?

Who we are is not only the sum of all our mistakes but all our accomplishments and successes as well. If we allow our faults and the results of our bad decisions to consume us then they will define us because that is who we will choose to become by focusing our thoughts on our mistakes instead of learning from them and choosing to change and become someone different. We can choose to grow, learn, and become greater than the sum of our mistakes and when we do that, the sum of our positive choices overcomes the sum of our past mistakes and we develop into a person of experience who is able to actually offer wisdom and guidance to others. I could have chosen to allow my past mistakes to define me, hold me back, and limit me from fulfilling my true potential. Instead, I chose to learn from my mistakes, leave them in the past, rise above adversity, judgment, ridicule, and personal opinions to become the person I was destined to be and positively influence powerful change in the lives of others as well as myself. If we are defined by our mistakes and it ends there and that's just who we are, never to change or progress any further, then great achievers of history never would have become great achievers of history. Where would our society be then? Sometimes the mistakes, even the really bad ones, are necessary to move us in the direction of greatness. I'm certainly not advocating here that we go out and make bad choices so we can learn to become great. Could I have made the choice not to make a bad decision and not to make the mistakes I made in the first place? Absolutely and who knows who I would have become in that case? The direction my life would have taken would be dramatically different from the path I am now on. That might have been great or it might possibly have led me down a road of despair and a worse reality than I now experience. I certainly would not have been in a position to coach those that I do now had I not had the experiences that have enabled me to do so. Yes, I would much rather have not made the mistakes I did but I honestly believe that as a result, I am now fulfilling my true destiny. What we focus our thoughts on with feeling, impacts the choices we make, those choices and how we respond to the outcome of those choices, defines who we become. Make positive choices today and choose to define yourself in a positive way.
